4 Things That Won't Help You Live Longer

We tend to concentrate on things that will make us healthier and happier, but have you ever considered the things that won't actually help you to live any longer? Some of the things we do are pointless when it comes to increasing our life expectancy, while others might just be wishful thinking. Here are some of the things that won't affect how long you live. 

1. The ages of your ancestors

Just because your grandfather lived to be 100 years old doesn't necessarily mean that you will. Yes, you share the same genes and DNA, but there are many other factors which cause us to live longer or shorter than other people. In many cases, if several people in a family seem to be living long lives, it is merely coincidence or the fact that they have all tried very hard to live healthier and better lives. If you drink a lot, smoke, are overweight or obese and have other health issues such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, the ages of your ancestors really won't make a difference. 

2. The place you live

Moving to a country with better food, better health care and a better quality of life can make you feel happier, but this won't necessarily be the factor that makes you live longer. Wherever you are in the world, you can make changes to help yourself live a longer and healthier life. You don't need to move to Spain to adapt a Mediterranean diet, and you can eat rice, fish and other healthy foods without moving to Japan. 

3. Status

Richer people might live lives full of nice things, but there is no evidence to suggest they live any longer than the rest of the world. Paying for better health care might be a factor if they fall very ill, but in terms of general health and life expectancy, money can't buy that. More education and learning is more likely to increase your life span than wealth and prosperity. 

4. Fewer stresses

If you are stressed constantly, this might eventually affect how long you live. However, it all comes down to how you deal with the stress, not necessarily how you avoid them altogether. Less big moves, fewer children and an easier job aren't exactly factors which will make you live longer, so enjoy your life while you have it and don't forget to include time to relax.
